Assumptions for the calculations above: Estimated number of shelving units assumes a 12" base shelf that allows for 72 volumes per unit. Square footage saved assumes a footprint of 10.30 square feet per shelving unit with the ADA preferred aisle width of 42" and also assumes that the units are arranged back to back. Much of the information for these calculations were found on Celsus: A Library Architecture Resource. The default figure of $4.73 per item is the annual cost of maintaining materials in open stacks in campus libraries for Syracuse University based on their paper, Collections and Space, Dames, Gwilt, Warren and Carrier, 2015.
