Librarians play a vital role in enabling research breakthroughs and real-world solutions. This vital role is celebrated in “Never underestimate the importance of a librarian,” the theme of the new Library Connect poster being introduced at the 2015 ACRL conference in Portland, Oregon. (Stop by Booth #351 at ACRL to pick up a copy of the poster while supplies last.)
The poster reimagines a decade-old series of posters from Elsevier with the same theme depicting images such as a high-energy laser laboratory and space exploration. The new poster features winning images from the Library Connect Photo Contest. Jeff Bailey, Library Director, Dean B. Ellis Library, Arkansas State University, took first and third place, and Michelle Price, Outreach and Special Collections Librarian, Lavery Library, St. John Fisher College, took second place in the contest.

Jeff Bailey has practiced librarianship for more than 24 years and worked in almost every area of the library, including circulation, public services and collection development. He now leads the library team at ASU, which has one central library that serves a range of library users, from incoming freshmen to doctoral students. His photos were taken inside a veterinarian’s office, and he describes the photo shoot as a group effort with colleague Linda Creibaum, an acquisitions and serials librarian, providing the patient, Jake the cat.

As an outreach librarian (among other responsibilities), Michelle Price supports the Chemistry, Biology and Physics departments, as well as the School of Nursing and School of Pharmacy at St. John Fisher College, which has an enrollment of approximately 4,000 full-time equivalent students. While observing data management practices, Michelle depicted an Ecological Field Methods class collecting samples from Lake Seneca. In Plant Biology, another class she supports, research data is supplied to the Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management.

The images from Jeff and Michelle encourage the audience to think about the processes that lead to the treatment of a sick animal or a threatened bioregion. A librarian’s work — even when unseen by most — is fundamental to conducting research, educating students, and disseminating knowledge.
“With the new ‘Never underestimate the importance of a librarian’ poster, Elsevier is shining a light on the contributions of very talented and dedicated individuals,” says Library Connect Editor Colleen DeLory. “We hope that the poster starts a conversation with library users about the carefully curated and managed resources, services and support provided by librarians.”
