Additional Initiatives
In addition to the information philanthropy initiatives already highlighted in this pamphlet, Elsevier participates in many others.
Examples of Elsevier's additional ongoing projects can be found below. One-time Elsevier-sponsored initiatives include a 2006 donation of medical textbooks to hospital libraries throughout Iraq and the 2005 "A Book In Your Name" program through which 80% of Elsevier employees donated books to 10 libraries in Africa, Asia and South America. Further, at the end of library conferences, Elsevier donates remaining books to local nonprofits.

International Council of Nurses Mobile Library
Nurses working in developing countries often struggle to access
current information for dealing with the tremendous health
challenges they face. Launched in December 2001, the ICN/MSD
(Merck Sharp & Dohme) Mobile Library program delivers
up-to-date health information to nursing professionals working
in remote areas of developing countries. Each library is housed
in a transportable trunk resilient to moisture, insects and hard
knocks and contains around 80 titles. Elsevier provides the latest
publications for the mobile
libraries and handles the
packing and shipping to
ensure their safe arrival.

RE Cares
Through Reed Elsevier’s community program RE Cares,
Elsevier provides significant support to libraries and researchers
around the globe. For example, in 2006, on behalf of RE Cares,
Elsevier donated $80,000 worth of medical books and journals
to the Health Sciences University of Mongolia. The books were
donated through the Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program,
which has provided 41 million books, software programs and
other educational materials to more than 50,000 institutions in
40 countries since 1954. The RE Cares program also allows
each RE employee to spend two
workdays per year volunteering
for a nonprofit and funds charities
nominated by RE employees.
