The NITP team scans documents for Mongolia’s first medical
information database.
In 2006, the National Information Technology Park (NITP) of Mongolia received from the Elsevier Foundation an Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries grant to digitize all doctoral theses and research reports and establish a medical information database. This project marked the first digitization of medical information in Mongolia and has resulted in this information being accessible to scientists, students and the general public.
NITP is a governmental, nonprofit organization. One of its functions is to operate a scientific and technological information library that was established in 1972. The very first R&D library in Mongolia, it houses and preserves all doctoral theses and R&D reports completed at the request of the government of Mongolia and provides science and technology information for scientists, students and the general public.
“This project marked the first digitization of medical information in Mongolia.”
Since 2003, we’ve been heading up the first attempt in Mongolia to digitize library resources. As part of this project, we’ve digitized scientific and technical materials written by Mongolian researchers and created databases of these materials. So far, we’ve created the Mongolian Scientists Database containing information on 3,720 scientists and their scientific work as well as the R&D Reports Database containing 2,470 reports.
“Our achievements in establishing the medical information database are all thanks to the Elsevier Foundation and its support of innovative efforts to make STM information widely accessible in developing countries.”
Previously in Mongolia, access to medical knowledge was limited because medical research materials were available only in paper form. Therefore, building on our recent experience with digitizing materials, last year we established our nation's first medical information database. This project was supported by the Elsevier Foundation grant and was completed in 2007. As a result of the project, 457 PhD and ScD (doctor of science) theses and abstracts and 714 R&D reports by Mongolian scientists are available for online browsing and offline usage in fulltext.
Our achievements in establishing the medical information database are all thanks to the Elsevier Foundation and its support of innovative efforts to make STM information widely accessible in developing countries.
