Nine receive 3rd Annual Scopus Young Scientist Award in India

In December 2008, in New Delhi, nine researchers received the Scopus Young Indian Scientist Award. Professor J.J. Theo Groothuizen, S&T counselor at the Royal Netherlands Embassy in India, presided over the ceremony. Recipients each received a certificate, cash prize and crystal trophy.
The award recognizes outstanding young Indian researchers who have provided significant new insights in their research areas. Over 200 researchers under the age of 40 submitted their work for consideration.
And the winners were:
- Agriculture: Dr. R. Raman, International Centre for Genetic Engg & Biotechnology, New Delhi
- Biological Sciences: Professor S. Ganesh, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
- Chemistry: Dr. B.V.S. Reddy, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad
- Earth Sciences: Dr. Govindasamy Bala, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
- Engineering: Professor Suman Chakraborthy, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
- Mathematics: Dr. Siva Athreya, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore
- Medicine: Dr. Bhanuprakash Reddy, National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad Physics: Dr. Moulik Parikh, Inter University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics, Pune, and Dr. Satyabrata Patnaik, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi
Finalists were selected by panelists who looked at entrants' h-indexes, publications and citations as well as patents based on Scopus data. Qualitative parameters included whether entrants' research resulted in new knowledge and provided fresh perspectives on topics researched.
"The Scopus award is a very interesting and novel way of highlighting the best of research from young scientists in the country. If it stimulates, even if by a small amount, the translation of quality research into quality publications, it would have served an important cause," said National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, Director K. Vijayaraghavan, a member of the panel. ![]()
