Librarians and academics discuss STM journal and book publishing
October 2008 brought three Library Connect Seminars, hosted by the Politecnico di Milano, in Italy, Universitat de Barcelona, in Spain, and Universidade do Porto, in Portugal. Judging by the average ratings attendees awarded on their event surveys (8.5 out of 10!) and the high attendance, all three events were extremely well received. The main ingredients for this success were that important institutions graciously hosted the events and our speakers included well-known academics from the Universitat de Barcelona and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, both in Barcelona; the Istituto Scientifico Universitario San Raffaele, in Milan; and the Royal Chemistry Society, in London.
The agendas focused on the processes involved in STM journal and book publishing, the value of specific Elsevier products
including Scopus and eBooks, and the free support services — such as product training and marketing consultations — provided
by Elsevier’s Customer Marketing team. Speakers included Dr. Cristina Güell Guillén, the head of user services at the Resource
Center for Learning and Research at the Universitat de Barcelona; Dr. Javier Clavero Campos, the head of the Digital Services Unit
at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya; and Dr. Laura Tei, the head of services at the Istituto San Raffaele's library. ![]()
