On The Road
Nordic library directors assess impact of investments in knowledge and research
By Michaela Kurschildgen, Events Marketing Manager, Elsevier, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

More than 40 attendees from Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland attended the 6th Annual Library Connect Nordic Librarian Forum, held in Helsinki in November 2008. Nordic librarians reported they have this annual event in their agendas and love to come. In fact, the forum benefited especially from Nordic support, in that the FinELib consortium, including particularly members Kaj Ekholm, Kristiina Hormia and Arja Tullienimi, kindly helped organize the program.

Addressing the theme "Valuing Scholarly Information," the forum featured speakers including Pekka Ylä-Anttila, the research director of the Research Institute of Finnish Economy (ETLA). Pekka spoke about the impact of the knowledge economy on nations’ economic development and overall welfare. Also very interesting was Per Koch, the director of analysis and strategic development at the Research Council of Norway, who gave a thought-provoking talk about investments in research and the ROI from that [see pages 4 and 12]. Martin Ince from THES spoke about university rankings, another hot topic much under discussion and of great interest for the audience.

Besides those speakers’ views on what’s happening in our industry, participants also got a look into Elsevier’s innovation kitchen. Elsevier colleagues spoke about new products and products in development, as well as our new approach on eBook content and our collaborative work with academics to enrich scientific article content. end of article
