2007 Elsevier Foundation awards support initiatives worldwide
By David Ruth, Senior Vice President, Global Corporate Relations, Elsevier, New York, NY, USA

Thirteen institutions around the world are receiving a total of USD $594,000 in 2007 Elsevier Foundation grants.

Six grants have been awarded under the foundation's Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries Program, which helps libraries use scientific, technical and medical information to promote health and economic advancement in the developing world. Awardees include institutions working in Africa, Asia and Latin America to improve access to scientific information, develop information resources and train librarians and researchers on how to use and deploy information for patient care, health research, HIV/AIDS, disaster preparedness and agricultural development.

Seven grants have been awarded under the New Scholars Program, helping scholars in the early stages of science and technology careers balance childcare and family responsibilities. Awardees represent institutions pioneering new approaches to childcare, mentoring, networking and participation in scholarly meetings. For example, among the 2007 recipients is UC Irvine, which received $87,500 to create the Professional Development Grants Program for Faculty Parents of Infants and Toddlers. The program will analyze difficulties faced by scholars with dependent families and provide dependent care assistance to qualifying tenure-track faculty so they can travel to professional meetings. Douglas Haynes, a UCI history professor, stated, “This nationally competitive award recognizes UCI’s ongoing commitment to gender equity and augments campus family-friendly resources for tenure-track faculty.”

Elsevier FoundationThe Elsevier Foundation, funded by Elsevier, has since its inception awarded more than 50 grants worth over a million dollars to nonprofit organizations working to support libraries and scholars in early stages of their careers. Through gift-matching, the foundation also supports Elsevier employees’ contributions to their communities. end of article
