Q: Do I need to pay to reuse Elsevier material?

A: There’s no short answer to this, as it depends on who you are and what your intended use of the needed material is. Elsevier is a signatory to the STM Permissions Guidelines (www.stm-assoc.org/stm-permission-guidelines). If you’re reusing material for republication with another STM permissions signatory, Elsevier grants permission in accordance with the guidelines. In addition, usually there is no charge when small amounts of material are to be reused in new publications or for noncommercial purposes.

Elsevier journal authors retain the right to use their articles in many ways without requesting permission. Authors may, for example, use their articles in their theses, classroom instructional materials, presentations or handouts at conferences, and collected works. Authors may also without getting permission expand their Elsevier-published articles into books or use parts of their articles in new publications. When a journal author requests permission outside of these situations, we consider each request on a case-by-case basis.

Copying of whole articles for classroom use usually requires a fee dependent upon the number of copies needed and is usually handled via an agreement with a local reproduction rights organization such as the Copyright Clearance Center in the US. However noncommercial educational institutes licensed to particular titles on ScienceDirect are permitted to use at no additional charge material from those titles, if the material is for use in print and electronic coursepacks for courses held at those institutes.
